Nemesis is a Diabolic. Created to protect a galactic Senator's daughter, Sidonia. The girl who has grown up by her side and who is as much as sister as a master. There's no one Nemesis wouldn't kill to keep her safe. But when the power-mad Emperor summons Sidonia to the galactic court as a hostage, there is only one way for Nemesis to protect Sidonia.

She must become her.

Now one of the galaxy's most dangerous weapons is masquerading in a world of corruption and Nemesis has to hide her true abilities or risk everything. As the Empire begins to fracture and rebellion looms closer, Nemesis learns that there is something stronger than her deadly force: the one thing she's been told she doesn't have - humanity. And, amidst all the danger, action and intrigue, her humanity might be the only thing that can save her, Sidonia and the entire Empire...

“All of us are fated to return to the same oblivion. And you can choose what happens between now and that final hour. No one else can.

After reading an excerpt about The Diabolic ages ago, I knew I was going to enjoy reading it. Holy hell, what a fantastic book.

I adore books that really draw me in. The writing style of Kincaid is stunning. The world which she has created is super intricate and feels totally complex and ALIVE. The amount of information you are given is intense, but not overwhelming. I appreciated finding out quite near the beginning what Diabolics are. It’s laid out for you right from the get-go. The Diabolic is also set in space, and it is VAST. There is so much detail about the galaxy and the Galatic Empire. The politics that are within The Diabolic are also SO good!

“The Emperor wishes me to send my innocent little lamb to the slaughter. No. Instead, I’ll send him my anaconda.”

The story follows Nemesis, a Diabolic that was purchased to protect Sidonia, the heir of the Galactic Senate. Nemesis will kill without a thought if anyone tries to hurt Sidonia. But her father does terrible things that are not allowed. One fateful day, the Emperor summons Sidonia to the Imperial Court. The Matriarch, Sidonia’s mother, has a better idea. Train Nemesis and put her in her daughter’s place. In order to do this, Nemesis needs to train and change her physical form in order to become more ‘human’. When the time comes, Nemesis is sent off to court and into a world where the political drama is high.

But everything is not as it seems. Nemesis is not the only heir at the Imperial Court. It is soon apparent why and it takes everything in Nemesis not to kill the Emperor. Tyrus, the crazy madman nephew of the Emperor, however, saves Nemesis from herself and soon she realizes that she feels emotions that a Diabolic should never feel. She soon sees and learns more about betrayal, lies, friendships, and love than she ever thought possible.

“It’s terrifying to realize your own decisions are shaping your destiny.”

Nemesis is a badass and incredible character. Although she was bought in order to protect Sidonia, that did not matter. Her love for her is so heartwarming. The stuff that Nemesis is willing to go through in order to protect her is insane. She just doesn’t want anything to happen to her. She’s willing to change her physical appearance and go to a place where danger is obvious. But she is a weapon and should not feel fear. But she DOES have emotions. Fear, loss and love, Nemesis feels it all. Watching the way she progresses through the story is super intense. She is SO strong and I love how amazing she is.

Sidonia is also a character I loved to read about. She has so much love for Nemesis and my heart broke several times with her. I felt so strongly for her friendship with Nemesis. She doesn’t like the idea of Nemesis getting hurt, even though that is her job. Her character progression was crazy and interesting and my heart breaks for her.

“You are brave and honorable and strong, and you are the only one who can see me as I am.”

Tyrus I think might be high up there on my favorite character list. I have such a love affair with crazy but cunning people. Tyrus, the crazy mad nephew to the Emperor so nobody thinks him a threat. Because of his strange behavior and crazy preachings to nothing, he was appointed the Successor Primus. Who would think a mad boy would want to rule? Oh boy, how wrong they are. Tyrus is seriously one of the most cunning and intelligent people in the book and my heart soared with his growth. I also fully appreciated the relationship between him and Nemesis. Completely slow-burning and gosh… I love him. I am SO curious about what will happen to them in the second book.

Overall, The Diabolic is a book that will keep you invested. It has backstabby political drama, biological creatures who should not feel emotion but Nemesis proves them wrong, and a vast world that you will fall in love with. Definitely, a book to pick up if you love sci-fi high paced action set in space!
