So I haven’t made a blog post in quite some time, and I apologize about that. However, life has just been an incredibly hectic roller coaster ride! So here it is, a life update!
First life change – Commitment.
Firstly, the biggest update happened on Christmas Eve. My darling Irdy asked me to be his darling bird for the rest of his life! I will keep the details of how he proposed in my heart and memory, but I will say he was incredibly cute. That means that we are now officially engaged (even though when I told my mother and family, they just assumed we’ve always been engaged the way we just act. I found that incredibly cute.) I absolutely adore Irdy with all my heart, and I cannot wait for the day we can say our vows and be the most dorky Mr. and Mrs in the Netherlands!
Here is a picture of the ring that is now lovingly wrapped around my tiny ickle finger.
Right now we have no plans for when we will eventually be getting married (or civil partnership, haven’t 100% decided yet) but I’m fairly certain once we have planned it out, I shall be letting you guys know.
Second life update – Moving.
Now, this moves me onto my next big life update. At the time of writing this blog post will be happening in less than a month! On the 4th of February 2017, I shall be heading back to Scotland for two weeks. Irdy will then be joining me in Scotland on the 11th. Reason for this will be because on the 18th, me and Irdy will be travelling back to the Netherlands for the last official time. That’s right, my flight from Edinburgh to Amsterdam on the 18th of February is a one way ticket. This means that I will be officially moving to the Netherlands in February!
I am super excited about this move. This means though that my time in Scotland is going to have mixed emotions, both good and sad. Good in terms that I am finally getting a jiggle on with getting everything organized for moving over to the Netherlands, and sad because I will be leaving my family and friends in Scotland. This move has been a long time coming and I am so super excited for my life to finally be put onto solid ground for longer than three months.
Before I leave Scotland, one of the plans we have is to have a big family and friends get together for a big meal. This will be my “going away” party/dinner (more so dinner, people still have to work the next day!) This will probably be an incredibly emotional dinner, but I am looking forward to seeing everyone and eating amazing food and having great discussions!
What’s helping me stay focused on the move.
The first thing that is really helping me stay focused with this move is the Netherlands and Scotland are not that far apart. If I want to ever go back to visit family and friends, it would only be a one hour or so trip by plane. I think I would of had a harder time with the move if I was moving to a country that was further away, i.e. Australia or USA. So at least I have distance on my side!
The second thing that has helped me with this move is the fact that I absolutely adore Irdy’s family. I love the fact that I will have a second family here who are all in close proximity to me. The support from his family as well has been incredible. It is a very hard move to make, especially as a non-native speaker of Dutch. They help me so much with feeling at home, and I couldn’t thank them enough. So both of these things combined will help me make this life changing move, and I cannot wait!
So what happens next?
Well once I arrive back to The Netherlands from Scotland , we shall be going to an appointment at City Hall to register me as a Dutch resident (note – Dutch resident and not citizen. For citizenship, it is a much longer process. One that will take five years to complete. I think this will start processing at the same time, though I am not 100% sure yet.) We will also get a bank account set up, health insurance set up and so on. Basically we will be organizing all the essential things for me to live permanently within the Netherlands. Once all of that is done, I’m good to stay forever!
This will be a massive moment in my life, and myself and Irdy are really looking forward to moving onto the next chapter of our life together.
Is it bad that one of the things I’m looking forward to is having a big family meal in the Netherlands to celebrate? No? Okay good. Because once everything is sorted for me living in the Netherlands permanently, we are going to have a big meal with the family. The meal will be a joint celebration. Firstly, for my official move and second for Irdy and my engagement. We’ll be eating at our local steak restaurant called Desperados. It is seriously one of the best restaurants I have been to here.
That’s really it for this blog post. They are the two most important things when it comes to life updates. I’m incredibly excited to see how the rest of 2017 plays out. I’m sure that no matter where I am in, I will be able to go full speed ahead with a big by my side and a head filled with dreams and hopes. These I am sure will help me succeed in whatever I want to do. I am stubborn, so I’m sure if I want something, I will bloody well make sure I do it!
Let’s see what it’s in store, shall we?
