The Long Way to a small angry planet by Becky Chambers, is by far one of my favorite books that I have read this year. This is my book review for this wonderful read.
The Long Way to a Small Angry Planet by Becky Chambers
I came about this book from looking up various recommendations on the internet. I saw that this book was in the long-list for the Women’s Prize for Fiction 2016 Paperback. Sadly it missed out on the short-list but you can check it out here.
This book really appealed to me. After some research, I found out that this book is highly recommended for people who enjoy the universe of Mass Effect. I would classify that game world as one of my favourites, so I was really excited to start reading.
The story takes place in a world were tunneling through space is a thing. For the majority of the narrative, the story is told on-board The Wayfarer – a tunneling ship. The crew of various species run the everyday life on the ship. Everybody on-board has their own quirky personalities and problems. The characters in the book are all incredibly written by Chambers. The main protagonist Rosemary is trying to escape a past that she didn’t want. She decides to join the Wayfarer as a clerk.
The characters are unique and wonderful
This sci-fi enriched book is teeming to the brim with characters who you will fall in love with, and will want to learn more about. As for an “action” based novel, like some sci-fi books are, there isn’t too much, however the book does vary enough to keep you wanting to know more and where they are heading off to next. I would classify the book more with the development of the characters, getting the lore of their species out there for you to enjoy and what the politics of the universe is (which quite frankly, is scary.)
I was so upset when I finished the book, cause I wanted more. Not many books do that for me. Needless to say, I am anticipating the release of the next book in the series, A Closed and Common Orbit, which will be published 20th of October, 2016! WOO!
Would I recommend this book? Yes. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a sci-fi based book filled of characterization, stories based in a fantastic universe. Also, if you are a fan of the Mass Effect gaming series, you will for enjoy this book. Highly recommended!
